VFW Auxiliary and Post 399 members bring together Scouts, families and friends as part of nationwide wreath-laying for veterans.
VFW Post 399 Auxiliary got the ball rolling only a month ago for Westport to join over 3,200 other cemeteries in the U.S., Puerto Rico and on foreign soil to celebrate Wreath Across America Day on Saturday, December 17.
And stepping up amongst the group of 100-plus volunteers were the impressive local Scouts of Troop 139 and 39.
“Scouts from Troops 139 and 39 were honored to participate in the inaugural Wreaths Across America for Westport Veterans at Assumption Ceremony. The mission of Wreaths Across America is to remember our fallen heroes and honor their families by laying a remembrance wreath upon each veteran’s grave,” said Scoutmaster Katherine O’Brien.
In the opening remarks, master of ceremonies Patty Kondub spoke for Auxiliary President Joan Evon, stating, “This is Westport’s first year of adopting a cemetery and we are looking forward to keeping this tradition for many years to come.”
When asked for a comment after the moving ceremony which finished with the playing of “Taps” as volunteers walked the cemetery placing wreaths and thanking each veteran for their service, Phil Delgado, VFW Post 399 Quartermaster summed it up best: “The VFW Post 399 is sincerely honored and extends our gratitude to all the community volunteers that helped support Wreaths Across America in Westport! We always tell our veteran community.…we can’t do it all, we can’t do alone and we can’t do it without help. Again, thank you for your support!”
Later in January, volunteers will be needed to collect the wreaths and also will be invited back to the VFW Post 399 https://vfw399ct.org/ for refreshments. Please contact Patty Kondub, Auxiliary Junior Vice-President at firstname.lastname@example.org further information or to receive updates.
